The Austin-Area Rare Bird Alert is a service of the Travis Audubon Society. This update is as of 9.00am, September 13th, 2007:

--- RARITIES FOUND THIS PAST WEEK ---

A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER (Vermivora pinus) put in an appearance at the
West Bouldin Greenbelt in Austin on September 12th.

A COUCH'S KINGBIRD (Tyrannus couchii) was along Upper Elgin Road near
Elgin on September 10th.

LESSER NIGHTHAWKS (Chordeiles acutipennis) have been reported at the
Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo, with the most recent
sightings as of September 10th.

A LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH (Seiurus motacilla) was spotted at the Canyon
of the Eagles Park on Lake Buchanan on September 8th.

Also on Lake Buchanan, there was a rather early WESTERN GREBE
(Aechmophorus occidentalis) and several early RING-BILLED GULLS (Larus
delawarensis) off Tanner Point on September 9th.

--- CONTINUING BIRDS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

A BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD (Selasphorus platycercus) first seen at a
private residence near Bee Caves and 360 in southwest Austin on August
27th was still being seen as of September 12th.

A BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD (Amazilia yucatanensis) first seen in
northwest Austin near the Arboretum on August 29th was still present
as of September 12th.

LEAST GREBES (Tachybaptus dominicus) have successful nested in the
flooded loam pit between Platt Lane and FM 973 (near Hornsby Bend).

A RINGED KINGFISHER (Ceryle torquatus) has been seen recently at the
Peaceable Kingdom Retreat located along the Lampasas River about 15
miles west of Salado in Bell County. As many as two birds can be seen
here from time to time, with the latest sighting as of August 27th.

--- RARE SIGHTINGS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

On September 5th, the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo
held an AMERICAN REDSTART (Setophaga ruticilla), as well as a
continuing COMMON PAURAQUE (Nyctidromus albicollis) and 2
WHIP-POOR-WILLS (Caprimulgus vociferous). A MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER
(Oporornis tolmiei) was also photographed.

A COMMON LOON (Gavia immer) was on Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir (Bell
County) on September 3rd.

A BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD (Selasphorus platycercus) has been visiting
feeders at a private residence in west Austin near Commons Ford Park
since August 31st (still present as of September 2nd).

A BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER (Dendroica fusca) put in an appearance in far
northwest Austin on September 3rd, while a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER
(Vermivora pinus) was near this location on September 1st.

A visit to the West Bouldin Greenbelt in Austin on September 3rd
produced a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER (Vermivora pinus), a NORTHERN PARULA
(Parula americana), along with an AMERICAN REDSTART (Setophaga
ruticilla).

The Hornsby Bend Hawkwatch was graced by no less than three
SWALLOW-TAILED KITES (Elanoides forficatus) on September 1st, with two
more individuals the following day. Three more of these birds were
near Utley also on September 1st.

A rather early RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH (Sitta canadensis) was near Utley
on September 1st.

A kayaking trip on September 1st on the Colorado River in Bastrop
County along the 10-mile stretch downstream from the FM 969 bridge
yielded 2 RINGED KINGFISHERS (Ceryle torquatus), an AMERICAN REDSTART
(Setophaga ruticilla) and 2 BALD EAGLES (Haliaeetus leucocephalus),

A WILSON'S SNIPE (Gallinago delicata) visited Temple on August 30th.

The first EARED GREBE (Podiceps nigricollis) of the fall was seen at
Hornsby Bend on August 29th.

Three SWALLOW-TAILED KITES (Elanoides forficatus) were in eastern
Bastrop County on August 28th. They were near Wilbarger Creek and FM
1704. Another SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was in nearby Utley on August 23rd.

On August 24th, the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo
held 2 COMMON PAURAQUE (Nyctidromus albicollis), 4 CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOWS
(Caprimulgus carolinensis), and 2 WHIP-POOR-WILLS (Caprimulgus
vociferus). The WHIP-POOR-WILLS were still present as of August 28th.

A MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER (Oporornis tolmiei) was photographed at the
Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo on August 27th.

A COMMON LOON (Gavia immer) was photographed on Lady Bird Lake (Town
Lake) near Longhorn Dam in Austin on August 26th.

Two LEAST GREBES (Tachybaptus dominicus) were in southwest Austin on
August 25th. They were seen at the Sendera subdivision retention ponds
near the intersection of Bremner and Companeros.

Twelve AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) were over
Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir (Bell County) on August 25th.

A HOODED WARBLER (Wilsonia citrina) was near Utley on August 24th.
