--- Rarities found this past week ---
Three LEAST TERNS (Sterna antillarum) were at Hornsby Bend on June 23rd.
A LEAST GREBE (Tachybaptus dominicus) was in the flooded loam pit
along Platt Lane on June 23rd. This is possibly a summering bird that
was seen at this location in April. Platt Lane is along the north end
of the Hornsby Bend property, with the flooded pit best viewed by
looking down into it from its eastern edge from the section of Platt
Lane that runs north-south.
--- Continuing birds from previous weeks ---
Two SCOTT'S ORIOLES (Icterus parisorum) visited a backyard feeder in
west Austin near 360 and Bee Caves on May 29th, with both birds still
present in the area as of June 25th.
A GREEN VIOLET-EAR (Colibri thalassinus) photographed at a private
residence between Bastrop and Paige on April 29th continues to be seen
as recently as June 18th.
A pair of AMERICAN KESTRELS (Falco sparverius) appears to be nesting
on the Sam Houston Building near the Capitol in downtown Austin.
LONG-BILLED THRASHERS (Toxostoma longirostre) are being heard and seen
regularly on the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo.
--- Rare sightings from previous weeks ---
Two BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS (Myiarchus tyrannulus) were at the
Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo June 9th thru June
11th. These birds were photographed.
A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW (Zonotrichia leucophrys) was on private
property in Austin west of the I-35/HWY 183 intersection on June 9th.
This bird was photographed.
Two BANK SWALLOWS (Riparia riparia) were studied at Hornsby Bend on June 9th.
Fort Hood (Bell County) held some interesting birds on June 8th
including a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT (Phalacrocorax auritus), a
BROAD-WINGED HAWK (Buteo platypterus), and a lingering LAZULI BUNTING
(Passerina amoena) that has been present since May 22nd.
A GRAY CATBIRD (Dumetella carolinensis) was at the Schaezler's Warbler
Woods property near Cibolo June 7th and June 8th. This bird was
photographed.
