The Austin-Area Rare Bird Alert is a service of the Travis Audubon Society. This update is as of 9.00am, June 14th, 2007:
--- Rarities found this past week ---
Two BROWN-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS (Myiarchus tyrannulus) were at the
Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo June 9th thru June
11th. These birds were photographed.
A WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW (Zonotrichia leucophrys) was on private
property in Austin west of the I-35/HWY 183 intersection on June 9th.
This bird was photographed.
Two BANK SWALLOWS (Riparia riparia) were studied at Hornsby Bend on June 9th.
Fort Hood (Bell County) held some interesting birds on June 8th
including a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT (Phalacrocorax auritus), a
BROAD-WINGED HAWK (Buteo platypterus), and a lingering LAZULI BUNTING
(Passerina amoena) that has been present since May 22nd.
A GRAY CATBIRD (Dumetella carolinensis) was at the Schaezler's Warbler
Woods property near Cibolo June 7th and June 8th. This bird was
photographed.
--- Continuing birds from previous weeks ---
Two SCOTT'S ORIOLES (Icterus parisorum) visited a backyard feeder in
west Austin near 360 and Bee Caves on May 29th, with at least one
still in the area as of June 6th.
BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRDS (Amazilia yucatanensis) have been seen
recently at four different private residences in Bastrop County the
past few weeks (last reports from May 31st). A couple of these birds
have been photographed.
LONG-BILLED THRASHERS (Toxostoma longirostre) are being heard and seen
regularly on the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo.
--- Rare sightings from previous weeks ---
A lingering COMMON LOON (Gavia immer) has been present near Longhorn
Dam on Town Lake in Austin. It was still present as of June 5th.
In Temple, a WOOD THRUSH (Hylocichla mustelina) has been heard and
seen consistently at the same location since May 21st, and was still
present as of June 3rd.
A late RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET (Regulus calendula) was at the West
Bouldin Greenbelt in Austin on June 2nd.
A MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER (Oporornis tolmiei) and a very late
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (Vermivora celata) were at the Schaezler's
Warbler Woods property near Cibolo on June 2nd.
A SCOTT'S ORIOLE (Icterus parisorum) was in the Spicewood area west of
Austin on June 1st.
On May 26th along Alum Creek in Bastop/Buescher State Park, there were
2 WOOD THRUSH (Hylocichla mustelina) and a SWAINSON'S WARBLER
(Limnothlypis swainsonii).
A BLACKPOLL WARBLER (Dendroica striata) was in far northwest Austin
(Williamson County) on May 26th.
Three BUSHTITS (PSaltriparus minimus) were on the Barton Creek
Preserve in southwest Austin on May 26th.
A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH (Catharus minimus) made an appearance in a Round
Rock backyard on May 26th.
A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH (Seiurus noveboracensis) was along the West
Bouldin Creek Greenbelt in Austin on May 25th.
