July 5, 2007

The Austin-Area Rare Bird Alert is a service of the Travis Audubon Society. This update is as of 9.00am, July 5th, 2007:

--- Rarities found this past week ---

A pair of SCOTT'S ORIOLES (Icterus parisorum) have been visiting a
private residence in the FM 1431/Nameless Road area, last reported on
July 4th.

The first report of WOOD STORKS (Mycteria americana) for the season
was of three birds over Utley (eastern Bastrop County) on June 29th.

--- Continuing birds from previous weeks ---

A LEAST GREBE (Tachybaptus dominicus) has been in the flooded loam pit
along Platt Lane, last reported on July 4th. This seems to be a
summering bird that was first seen at this location in April. Platt
Lane is along the north end of the Hornsby Bend property, with the
flooded pit best viewed by looking down into it from its western edge
from the section of Platt Lane that runs north to south.

Two SCOTT'S ORIOLES (Icterus parisorum) visited a backyard feeder in
west Austin near 360 and Bee Caves on May 29th, with both birds still
present in the area as of July 4th.

A GREEN VIOLET-EAR (Colibri thalassinus) photographed at a private
residence between Bastrop and Paige on April 29th continues to be seen
as recently as June 29th.

A pair of AMERICAN KESTRELS (Falco sparverius) appears to be nesting
on the Sam Houston Building near the Capitol in downtown Austin.

--- Rare sightings from previous weeks ---

Three LEAST TERNS (Sterna antillarum) were at Hornsby Bend on June 23rd.
