The Austin-Area Rare Bird Alert is a service of the Travis Audubon Society. This update is as of 9.00am, March 19th, 2009:

--- EXCEPTIONAL SIGHTINGS ---

A breeding plumaged RED-NECKED GREBE (Podiceps grisegena) was discovered on Lake Buchanan on March 15th and has been seen (and photographed) by several folks thru at least March 17th. It has been most readily seen in loose association with a group of Western Grebes from Black Rock Park ($4/person) on the southwest portion of the lake. Black Rock Park is off of RR 261 just a couple miles north of HWY 29. The lake is rather big and other areas should be explored if the bird is not found here. There is only 1 prior documented record for the Austin area.

A male BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD (Cynanthus latirostris) was present (and photographed) at a private residence just east of Kendalia (Kendall County) from March 10th thru March 17th. Unfortunately, the residence is not able to host visiting birders.

--- RARITIES FOUND THIS PAST WEEK---

Also of note on Lake Buchanan are a PACIFIC LOON (Gavia pacifica) seen on March 15th and 16th either from just west of the dam or from Black Rock Park, and up to 34 WESTERN GREBES (Aechmophorus occidentalis) that are mostly being seen from Black Rock Park - first noted on March 15th, still being seen as of March 18th.

CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS (Spizella pallida) continue to show up early with 1 at Hornsby Bend on March 14th, and 2 in w. Bastrop County on March 17th.

Two SNOWY PLOVERS (Charadrius alexandrinus) were reported at Bob Wendt Park on Lake Travis on March 13th.

--- CONTINUING BIRDS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

Up to 2 BLACK PHOEBES (Sayornis nigricans) are present at Guadalupe River State Park, last reported on March 15th. The birds can be seen along the river from the hiking trail that runs adjacent to the river near the picnic areas and just below the main parking area there.

A female LONG-TAILED DUCK (Clangula hyemalis) was discovered on Lake Lady Bird (Town Lake) in Austin on February 15th. It has been photographed and seen by several folks thru at least March 1st. The bird is most readily seen on the water from either a kayak or canoe about halfway betwen Red Bud Island and the pedestrian bridge under MoPac. The bird has been seen from land a few times, either from the trails at Red Bud Island or the various access points near to where MoPac crosses the lake.

A female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK (Pheucticus melanocephalus) has been present (and photographed) at a private residence in nw. Austin near the Arboretum from January 18th thru March 14th .

An amazing 12 WESTERN BLUEBIRDS (Sialia mexicana) were photographed on Canyon Lake on January 24th, and were still present at least thru March 2nd. These birds are located at Cranes Mill Park on the southside of the lake, about two-thirds of the way from the entrance to the end of the peninsula there.

--- RARE SIGHTINGS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

Two LARK BUNTINGS (Calamospiza melanocorys) were seen on March 11th along CR 349 on the north'ish side of Granger Lake, near the Willis Creek Park.

--- RARITIES FOUND THIS PAST WEEK---

Several migrants and returning breeding species have been reported in our area already. A couple of the more noteworthy early arrivals include: a WILSON'S PHALAROPE (Phalaropus tricolor) at Hornsby Bend on March 11th; 2 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS (Dendroica dominica) on March 7th, 1 NASHVILLE WARBLER (Vermivora ruficapilla) on March 10th, and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW (Spizella pallida) on March 8th, all in the same subdivision in far northwest Austin (north of Anderson Mill & east of HWY 183).

At least one COMMON GOLDENEYE (Bucephala clangula) and at least one VIRGINIA RAIL (Rallus limicola) continue on and around the ponds at Hornsby Bend as of February 14th (as many as four of each have been present his winter).

A RINGED KINGFISHER (Megaceryle torquatus) was at Aquarena Springs in San Marcos on January 30th and was noted there again on February 14th.

A PALM WARBLER (Dendroica palmarum) was seen again on February 15th at Commons Ford Park west of Austin. This bird has been observed on-and-off at this location for the past three winters.

An amazing 12 WESTERN BLUEBIRDS (Sialia mexicana) were photographed on Canyon Lake on January 24th, and were still present at least thru January 26th. These birds are located at Cranes Mill Park on the southside of the lake, about two-thirds of the way from the entrance to the end of the peninsula there.

A GREEN HERON (Butorides virescens) was along Shoal Creek near where it runs into Lake Lady Bird in Austin on January 23rd.

Single ZONE-TAILED HAWKS (Buteo albonotatus) were noted on January 22nd in two locations. One was near the intersection of FM 969 and FM 1209 in western Bastrop County and the other was studied in Hays County near the intersection of FM 2327 and Red Hawk Road near Wimberley.

Up to 3 FERRUGINOUS HAWKS (Buteo regalis) continue in the fields between FM 1625 and HWY 183 south of McKenzie Road as of January 20th. These birds were first seen on the Austin Christmas Bird Count on December 20th.

A LONG-BILLED THRASHER (Toxostoma longirostre) continues at McKinney Falls State Park as of January 19th. This bird was also first located during the Austin CBC on December 20th.

An adult male BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD (Selasphorus platycercus) was photographed at a private residence in the Great Hills area of northwest Austin on December 7th.

A PALM WARBLER (Dendroica palmarum) was photographed at Commons Ford Park on the west side of Austin on December 7th. This is likely a returning bird that has been present in the park two of the last three winters.

Seven HORNED GREBES (Podiceps auritus) were on Stillhouse Hollow Lake at Union Grove WMA on December 7th.

A RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER (Sphyrapicus nuchalis) was photographed in a northwest Austin neighborhood near 183/620 on December 6th.

A WOOD THRUSH (Hylocichla mustelina) was photographed at a private residence in Utley (western Bastrop County) on December 4th.

A late PROTHONOTARY WARBLER (Protonotaria citrea) has been present at Hornsby Bend, near the birding shelter on Pond 2, since October 18th (still present as of October 21st).

A yellow-lored YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER (Dendroica dominica) put in an appearance at a Smithville residence on October 20th.

A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER (Dendroica pensylvanica) was studied near the courthouse in Bastrop on October 20th.

The Granger Lake area was productive on October 19th with 5 ROSEATE SPOONBILLS (Platalea ajaja) at Willis Creek Park, 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS (Pluvialis dominica) at Friendship Park, and a distinctive heard-only GREAT KISKADEE (Pitangus sulphuratus) near the south end of the dam.

Two RINGED KINGFISHERS (Megaceryle torquatus) were along the Colorado River at McKinney Roughs on October 19th.

The seldom birded area of far eastern Travis County southeast of Manor was productive on October 18th with a late WOOD STORK (Mycteria americana), and 4 WILSON'S PHALAROPES (Phalaropus tricolor).

(Big) Webberville Park held an AMERICAN REDSTART (Setophaga ruticilla) and a MOURNING WARBLER (Oporornis philadelphia) while (Little) Webberville Park had a BALD EAGLE (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), all on October 18th.

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER (Pluvialis dominica) was in eastern Bastrop County near Utley on October 18th.

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER (Pluvialis dominica) has been on the exposed shoreline of Lake Pflugerville since September 30th (still present as of October 11th).

A BALD EAGLE (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) put in an appearance at Hornsby Bend on October 11th. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT (Icteria virens) and a BALTIMORE ORIOLE (Icterus galbula) were also on the property along the river on the 11th.

A Green Jay (Cyanocorax yncas) was reported at a private residence in Dripping Springs on September 13th by an observer who is familiar with this species, but has not seen since. There are currently no well-documented records for the Austin area.

Perhaps pushed inland by Hurricane Ike, 13 Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia) were on Granger Lake on September 14th while 2 were at Temple's Slough Pond on September 15th.

The Schaezler's Warbler Woods property in Cibolo held a MacGillivray's Warbler (Oporornis tolmiei) on September 15th.

A Mottled Duck (Anas fulvigula) was at Willis Creek Park on Granger Lake on September 14th.

A Willet (Tringa semipalmata) stopped at Hornsby Bend on September 14th.

A juvenile Sora (Porzana carolina) was at Hornsby Bend on September 13th while another was found dead at the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property in Cibolo on September 15th.

A Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) was at Union Grove WMA along Stillhouse Hollow Lake on September 13th.

A Northern Waterthrush (Seiurus noveboracensis) was along the Colorado River at Hornsby Bend on September 13th.

The Schaezler's Warbler Woods property in Cibolo held a MacGillivray's Warbler (Oporornis tolmiei) on September 11th.

Two Reddish Egrets (Egretta rufescens) continue on Canyon Lake as of September 7th. First discovered on August 8th, the birds have been frequenting coves along the Canyon Park causeway.

The Schaezler's Warbler Woods property in Cibolo has been hosting a Long-billed Thrasher (Toxostoma longirostre), reported as recently as September 6th.

A surprisingly early and out-of-place Lark Bunting (Calamospiza melanocorys) was photographed coming to a feeder in Leander September 5th thru September 7th.

Two Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) were along the Colorado River between the town of Webberville and (Big) Webberville Park on September 6th.

The Schaezler's Warbler Woods property in Cibolo was productive on September 4th, with an early Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus) as well as a MacGillivray's Warbler (Oporornis tolmiei).

A Northern Waterthrush (Seiurus noveboracensis) was along the Colorado River at Hornsby Bend on September 1st.

A Marbled Godwit (Limosa fedoa) was a nice find on the San Gabriel WMA along Granger Lake on August 31st.

--- EXCEPTIONAL SIGHTINGS ---

A cooperative REEVE (Philomachus pugnax) has been at Hornsby Bend on Pond 1W. First found on April 12th, this bird has been studied and photographed by many, providing the first area record since 1992. This exceptional find was still present as of April 26th.

--- RARITIES FOUND THIS PAST WEEK---

Recent migrants of interest spotted at the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo include a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER (Vermivora chrysoptera) on April 29th.

Two GLOSSY IBIS (Plegadis falcinellus) were between Temple and Belton on April 29th.

A WOOD THRUSH (Hylocichla mustelina) was in the Windsor Park area of Austin on April 29th.

An immature ZONE-TAILED HAWK (Buteo albonotatus) was over Northwest District Park in Austin on April 28th.

A LONG-BILLED THRASHER (Toxostoma longirostre) was studied in Dripping Springs on April 28th.

An immature BROWN PELICAN (Pelecanus occidentalis) was photographed on Lake Travis on April 26th. The bird was on the buoy for mile marker 29, on the east side of Pace Bend Park.

A BLACKPOLL WARBLER (Dendroica striata) was near Smithville on April 26th.

A visit to the Granger Lake area on April 26th was productive with the following highlights: a single BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (Pluvialis squatarola) at a stock pond along CR 352; a lone LAUGHING GULL (Larus atricilla) on the lake from Friendship Park; and three CASSIN'S SPARROWS (Aimophila cassinii) along CR 352.


Hornsby Bend held some interesting birds on April 26th with a WHIMBREL (Numenius phaeopus) and a LAUGHING GULL (Larus atricilla) on the ponds and a SCARLET TANAGER (Piranga olivacea) in the woods.

A singing CASSIN'S SPARROW (Aimophila cassinii) was at Union Grove WMA on Stillhouse Hollow Lake on April 26th.

A PALM WARBLER (Dendroica palmarum) was studied in southwest Austin off Southwest Parkway on April 25th.

--- RARITIES FOUND THIS PAST WEEK---

A LAZULI BUNTING (Passerina amoena) was studied near Wimberly on March 23rd.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK (Buteo albonotatus) was near Hamilton Pool on March 23rd.

Another ZONE-TAILED HAWK (Buteo albonotatus) flew over the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo on March 22nd.

An early KENTUCKY WARBLER (Oporornis formosus) was near Utley on March 22nd.

A GREEN HERON (Butorides virescens) was along Town Lake near Barton Springs on March 21st.

--- CONTINUING BIRDS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE (Pipilo chlorurus) photographed at Southeast Metro Park on January 20th was still being seen as of March 17th. The park is off HWY 71 just east of FM 973 and HWY 45. The bird has been found off the northwest portion of the parking lot where the trailhead for the Primitive Trail is located, which is north of the ball fields.

A PALM WARBLER (Dendroica palmarum) was photographed at Commons Ford on the west side of Austin on March 9th and was still present as of March 22nd.

A GRAY CATBIRD (Dumetella carolinensis) has been present much of the winter at the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo. It was last reported there on March 24th. In addition, both COMMON PAURAQUE (Nyctidromus albicollis) and LONG-BILLED THRASHER (Toxostoma longirostre) have been seen as recently as March 20th.

A BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD (Selasphorus platycercus) first seen at a private residence near Bee Caves and 360 in southwest Austin on August 27th was still being seen as of March 15th.

LEAST GREBES (Tachybaptus dominicus) continue at Hornsby Bend where at least a pair of birds has been present for several months. The latest sighting of these birds was on March 25th.

A pair of RINGED KINGFISHERS (Megaceryle torquatus) has been present along the river at Pedernales Falls State Park, with the last report as of March 9th. Another pair is present around Hornsby Bend, with the last report of those birds on March 9th.

--- RARE SIGHTINGS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

A pair of COMMON GOLDENEYES (Bucephala clangula) were at Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant on the east side of Austin on March 18th.

An early PROTHONOTARY WARBLER (Protonotaria citrea) and a couple of YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS (Dendroica dominica) were noted near Utley in eastern Bastrop County on March 16th.

A GREEN HERON (Butorides virescens) was in northwest Austin on March 9th and again on March 16th.

The first report of WHIP-POOR-WILL (Caprimulgus vociferus) this spring was a rather early one near Utley on March 15th.

Four GREATER SCAUP (Aythya marila) were on Meadow Lake in Round Rock on March 10th.

Early FRANKLIN'S GULLS (Larus pipixcan) include 3 on Lake Walter E. Long on March 9th and 3 at Granger Lake on March 10th.

A LEAST GREBE (Tachybaptus dominicus) was at Mills Pond near Wells Branch on March 8th and March 9th.

A SAY'S PHOEBE (Sayornis saya) was seen at Tejas Camp on Lake Georgetown on March 8th.
