The Austin-Area Rare Bird Alert is a service of the Travis Audubon Society. This update is as of 9.00am, May 29th, 2009:

--- RARITIES FOUND THIS PAST WEEK---

A BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD (Amazilia yucatanensis) was present at a private residence near Utley on May 28th.

An immature WHITE IBIS (Eudocimus albus) was seen at Hornsby Bend on May 27th.

CASSIN'S SPARROWS (Aimophila cassinii) continue to make a strong showing in our area this spring/summer. A number of birds were heard/seen on May 23rd in areas of Bell County including along FM 1123 between Holland and Belton, and off of Dillard Road near I-35 just east of Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir. Eleven individuals were tallied on May 25th as part of a breeding bird survey run near the community of Walburg (Williamson County). Two additional singing birds were heard/seen on May 25th along Post Oak Road just west of (Big) Webberville Park.

Two GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS (Vermivora chrysoptera) were photographed at Southeast Metro Park (off Hwy 71 east of Bergstrom Airport) on May 23rd.

A MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER (Oporornis tolmiei) was studied along Shoal Creek just north of 34th Street in Austin on May 23rd.

Individual PURPLE GALLINULES (Porphyrio martinica)) have been sighted around the gazebo at Landa Park in New Braunfels and also at the water rentention pond off Ernest Robles Way (near Brodie Lane) in Sunset Valley (south Austin). Both birds were last reported on May 22nd.

--- CONTINUING BIRDS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

A PURPLE GALLINULE (Porphyrio martinica) has been present May 18th thru at least May 23rd at the pond in the Triangle devleopment area near the northwest corner of 45th and Guadalupe Streets in Austin.

A GREAT KISKADEE (Pitangus sulphuratus) was found along Smith School Road north of the TPWD Headquarters in far south Austin on May 6th. It was seen again at nearby McKinney Falls State Park on May 11th, just a bit northeast of the lower falls.

Two MOTTLED DUCKS (Anas fulvigula) were photographed on the ponds at Hornsby Bend on April 30th and were still present there as of May 27th.

Up to 6 CASSIN'S SPARROWS (Aimophila cassinii) have been seen/heard in the Mueller Development area (Austin), north and northwest of the old air traffic control tower as recently as May 23rd.

A VERDIN (Auriparus flaviceps) was near the intersection of Old Ferry and River roads in far western Travis County (near Pace Bend park) on April 12th and was stil in the same location as of May 10th.

LONG-BILLED THRASHERS (Toxostoma longirostre) are seen often at the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo. The most recent report of one there is from May 20th.

--- RARE SIGHTINGS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

A female GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER (Vermivora chrysoptera) was studied at Nicholas Dawson Park in south Austin on May 21st.

An immature WHITE IBIS (Eudocimus albus) was in Temple on May 21st.

A lingering ANHINGA (Anhinga anhinga) has been present along Brushy Creek in Round Rock, with the latest sighting on May 20th.

A SANDERLING (Calidris alba) was photographed at the ponds at Hornsby Bend on May 17th and was still present as of May 19th.

A TRICOLORED HERON (Egretta tricolor0 was seen at Hornsby Bend on May 19th.

A BLACKPOLL WARBLER (Dendroica striata) was present at a private residence in the Hyde Park neighborhood in Austin on May 18th. Another one was seen that same day in far nw. Austin near Anderson Mill and Hwy 183.

A late HERMIT THRUSH (Catharus guttatus) was at a private residence in far w. Austin between Commons Ford and Emma Long Parks on May 18th.

Quite an outstanding number for the spring, 25 WHITE IBIS (Eudocimus albus) were at Shipp Lake in eastern Bastrop County on May 17th.

On May 17th, Temple Park on Belton Lake held 1 RUDDY TURNSTONE (Arenaria interpres) and 7 SANDERLINGS (Calidris alba).

A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO (Coccyzus erythrophthalmus) was a great find in far nw. Austin on May 16th.

A LEAST TERN (Sternula antillarum) stopped over in Temple at Slough pond on May 16th.

A male WESTERN TANAGER (Piranga ludoviciana) was a great find on May 14th along Lazy River Road off of FM 969 near the Travis/Bastrop County line.

WHITE IBIS (Eudocimus albus) continue to be a story this spring with regular reports of 1 adult and 1 immature at Hornsby Bend. Of special interest is 2 adults seen coming into a large Cattle Egret colony just to the left of the entrance to (Big) Webberville Park. Folks should keep an eye out for possible nesting at this location as White Ibis are not known to breed in the checklist area.

Three reports of MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER (Oporornis tolmiei) this week with one along Lost Creek near Barton Creek Blvd in west Austin on May 9th and 2 reports at the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo on May 8th and May 12th.

CASSIN'S SPARROWS (Aimophila cassinii) continue to make news this week with several sightings. On May 9th, one was just east of the town of Webberville and 3 others were in fields in the northeast corner of Travis County. On May 10th, another was found at Pace Bend Park (w. side of Travis County) and one was nearby at the corner or Old Ferry and River Roads. Yet another individual was seen on May 11th between Neiderwald and Lockhart.

A fantastic find was a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER (Dendroica caerulescens) photographed at a private residence near Utley (western Bastrop County) on May 12th.

A male TROPICAL PARULA (Parula pitiayumi) was well-studied on May 10th at the Bamberger Ranch in Blanco County.

A SCOTT'S ORIOLE (Icterus parisorum) was seen near the intersection of Old Ferry and River roads near Pace Bend Park in far western Travis County on May 10th.

A TRICOLORED HERON (Egretta tricolor) was in Landa Park in New Braunfels on May 9th.

A GREAT KISKADEE (Pitangus sulphuratus) was found along Smith School Road north of the TPWD Headquarters in far south Austin on May 6th. It was seen again at nearby McKinney Falls State Park on May 11th, just a bit northeast of the lower falls.

Two MOTTLED DUCKS (Anas fulvigula) were photographed on the ponds at Hornsby Bend on April 30th and were still present there as of May 16th.

Quite surprising is a LEAST BITTERN (Ixobrychus exilis) that has been hiding out in the limited vegetation around the Turtle Pond on the University of Texas campus in Austin. The bird was first found/photographed on April 21st and was seen thru at least May 2nd though it can remain remarkably well hidden. The UT Turtle Pond/Tower Garden is immediately to the north of the UT Tower just to the southeast of the intersection of Guadalupe and 24th street. It has been mostly lurking deep in the clump of grass near the lower end of the pond.

A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE (Elanoides forficatus) was seen soaring over the Oak Hill area (far southwest Austin) on May 5th.

Getting quite late, single SPRAGUE'S PIPITS (Anthus spragueii) were found in Temple on May 3rd and May 5th.

A BLACKPOLL WARBLER (Dendroica striata) was studied at Temple Lions Park on May 3rd.

A WHITE IBIS (Eudocimus albus) and a COUCH'S KINGBIRD (Tyrannus couchii) were at Aquarena Springs in San Marcos on May 3rd.

The Granger Lake area was productive on May 2nd with the following highlights: an immature BROWN PELICAN (Pelecanus occidentalis) on the lake, an immature WHITE IBIS (Eudocimus albus) at Willis Creek Park, a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO (Coccyzus erythrophthalmus) at San Gabriel WMA, and a CASSIN'S SPARROW (Aimophila cassinii) along Harber Rd north of Bartlett.

Still more WHITE IBIS (Eudocimus albus) reports, with 8 adults seen at McKinney Falls State Park on May 2nd.

Another CASSIN'S SPARROW (Aimophila cassinii) was in Round Rock on May 2nd.

Still more CASSIN'S SPARROWS (Aimophila cassinii) were found near Shipp Lake in eastern Bastrop County on May 2nd. Up to 4 territorial birds were heard singing along the Loop Rd just north of Shipp Lake and HWY 71.

A kayaking trip between (Big) Webberville Park and the FM 969 bridge near Utley yielded one TRICOLORED HERON (Egretta tricolor) on May 2nd.

(Big) Webberville Park may again be hosting breeding COUCH'S KINGBIRDS (Tyrannus couchii). This species has nested at this location in the past and as many as 4 birds were seen there as recently as May 14th.

A kayaking trip between (Big) Webberville Park and the FM 969 bridge near Utley yielded one TRICOLORED HERON (Egretta tricolor) on May 2nd.

A BLACKPOLL WARBLER (Dendroica striata) was studied on April 30th along the Barton Creek Greenbelt (southwest Austin) one hundred to two hundred yards south of Sculpture Falls.

Two SWALLOW-TAILED KITES (Elanoides forficatus) were seen off Reed Park Road south of Jonestown (Travis County) on April 28th.

The water quality pond at St. Edward's University in south Austin held 2 VIRGINIA RAILS (Rallus limicola) on April 28th.

Getting late was a COMMON LOON (Gavia immer) seen from Iron Bridge Park on Lake Belton on April 28th.

An influx of GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS (Vermivora chrysoptera) were seen this week. As many as 7 different sightings (some of multiple birds) were reported at various locations, most were in & around Austin.

BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS (Vermivora pinus) are also making a strong showing this spring. An additional 7 sightings were tallied this week at various sites.

A bumper crop of LAZULI BUNTINGS (Passerina amoena) continue to pass thru central Texas. Observers sifting thru mixed bunting flocks have reported at least six sightings this week, with the most notable being up to 5 at one private residence in western Bastrop County.

WOOD THRUSHES (Hylocichla mustelina) made a good showing this week with one at Temple Lions Park on April 24th, one at the W. Bouldin Creek Greenbelt in south Austin on April 24th (still present as of April 27th), one at the State Capitol Grounds in Austin on April 25th, one in far nw. Austin (Williamson County) on April 26th, and one at the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo on April 27th and 28th.

A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER (Dendroica dominica) put in an appearance in the wooded area just southwest of the Hwy. 360 bridge over Lake Austin on April 27th.

The Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo received a lot of birder coverage this past week, including 2 field trips during the TOS meeting. Several interesting sightings were mentioned, included a report of a SWAINSON'S WARBLER (Limnothlypis swainsonii) on April 26th and April 27th.

Something was amiss with late migrating RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS (Mergus serrator) on April 26th, with 2 females studied in the morning at Stillhouse Hollow Lake and 3 females that stopped over at Hornsby Bend late that afternoon.

A trip to Granger Lake on April 26th was productive with 4 MOTTLED DUCKS (Anas fulvigula), a lingering NORTHERN HARRIER (Circus cyaneus), and a first-year HERRING GULL (Larus argentatus).

A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO (Coccyzus erythrophthalmus) was photographed April 25th at Southeast Metro Park, which is east of the Austin airport along HWY 71.

A GLOSSY IBIS (Plegadis falcinellus) was photographed on Pond 1West at Hornsby Bend on April 24th. An adult HERRING GULL (Larus argentatus) also put in an appearance over the ponds that day.

A WORM-EATING WARBLER (Helmitheros vermivorum) was photographed on April 24th in a backyard off of Duval Road between 183 and MoPac in northwest Austin.

A visit to (Big) Webberville Park on April 24th was productive with the following highlights: 2 WHITE IBIS (Eudocimus albus), a singing YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER (Dendroica dominica), and 3 lingering BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS (Euphagus cyanocephalus).

--- Exceptional Sightings---

An amazing find was a RED-FACED WARBLER (Cardellina rubrifrons) in the Tarrytown neighborhood west of downtown Austin. The bird was studied for close to an hour late afternoon on April 23th and numerous photographs were taken. Unfortunately, it was not relocated the subsequent morning despite some searching. This sighting will be the first documented record for the Edward's Plateau, the first for Travis County and the second for the Austin area (the first being a bird in Bastrop County in May 1982).

A VERDIN (Auriparus flaviceps) was near the intersection of Old Ferry and River roads in far western Travis County (near Pace Bend park) on April 12th and was stil in the same location as of April 26th.

--- RARE SIGHTINGS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

Two SWALLOW-TAILED KITES (Elanoides forficatus) were seen off Reed Park Road south of Jonestown (Travis County) on April 28th.

The water quality pond at St. Edward's University in south Austin held 2 VIRGINIA RAILS (Rallus limicola) on April 28th.

Getting late was a COMMON LOON (Gavia immer) seen from Iron Bridge Park on Lake Belton on April 28th.

An influx of GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS (Vermivora chrysoptera) were seen this week. As many as 7 different sightings (some of multiple birds) were reported at various locations, most were in & around Austin.

BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS (Vermivora pinus) are also making a strong showing this spring. An additional 7 sightings were tallied this week at various sites.

A bumper crop of LAZULI BUNTINGS (Passerina amoena) continue to pass thru central Texas. Observers sifting thru mixed bunting flocks have reported at least six sightings this week, with the most notable being up to 5 at one private residence in western Bastrop County.

WOOD THRUSHES (Hylocichla mustelina) made a good showing this week with one at Temple Lions Park on April 24th, one at the W. Bouldin Creek Greenbelt in south Austin on April 24th (still present as of April 27th), one at the State Capitol Grounds in Austin on April 25th, one in far nw. Austin (Williamson County) on April 26th, and one at the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo on April 27th and 28th.

A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER (Dendroica dominica) put in an appearance in the wooded area just southwest of the Hwy. 360 bridge over Lake Austin
on April 27th.

The Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo received a lot of birder coverage this past week, including 2 field trips during the TOS meeting. Several interesting sightings were mentioned, included a report of a SWAINSON'S WARBLER (Limnothlypis swainsonii) on April 26th and April 27th.

Something was amiss with late migrating RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS (Mergus serrator) on April 26th, with 2 females studied in the morning at Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir and 3 females that stopped over at Hornsby Bend late that afternoon.

A trip to Granger Lake on April 26th was productive with 4 MOTTLED DUCKS (Anas fulvigula), a lingering NORTHERN HARRIER (Circus cyaneus), and a first-year HERRING GULL (Larus argentatus).

A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO (Coccyzus erythrophthalmus) was photographed April 25th at Southeast Metro Park, which is east of the Austin Airport along HWY 71.

A GLOSSY IBIS (Plegadis falcinellus) was photographed on Pond 1West at Hornsby Bend on April 24th. An adult HERRING GULL (Larus argentatus) also put in an appearance over the ponds that day.

A WORM-EATING WARBLER (Helmitheros vermivorum) was photographed on April 24th in a backyard off of Duval Road between 183 and MoPac in northwest Austin.

A visit to (Big) Webberville Park on April 24th was productive with the following highlights: 2 WHITE IBIS (Eudocimus albus), a singing YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER (Dendroica dominica), and 3 lingering BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS (Euphagus cyanocephalus).

A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH (Catharus fuscescens) was studied near Utley on April 22nd.

A GREATER SCAUP (Aythya marila) was photographed at Hornsby Bend on April 21st. 

A SNOWY PLOVER (Charadrius alexandrinus) was photographed near the dam at Granger Lake on April 19th.

A singing CASSIN'S SPARROW (Aimophila cassinii) was an unexpected find on the Loop Rd. near Ship Lake in eastern Bastrop County on April 19th.

Two MOTTLED DUCKS (Anas fulvigula) were at WIllis Creek Park on Granger Lake on April 19th.

A male BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK (Pheucticus melanocephalus) was photographed at the bird blind at Pedernales State Park on April 19th.

--- RARITIES FOUND THIS PAST WEEK---

Quite surprising is a LEAST BITTERN (Ixobrychus exilis) that has been hiding out in the limited vegetation around the Turtle Pond on the University of Texas campus in Austin. The bird was first found/photographed on April 21st and was seen thru the end of the day on April 22nd, though it can remain remarkably well hidden. The UT Turtle Pond/Tower Garden is immediately to the north of the UT Tower just to the southeast of the intersection of Guadalupe and 24th street. It has been mostly lurking deep in the clump of grass near the lower end of the pond.

--- CONTINUING BIRDS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

LONG-BILLED THRASHERS (Toxostoma longirostre) are frequently seen at the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo. Up to 2 birds have been present as of late, with the most recent report from April 20th.

--- RARE SIGHTINGS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

LAZULI BUNTINGS (Passerina amoena) have made a strong showing this spring. There were at least 7 separate sightings of individual birds April 11th thru April 15th scattered thru the western half of the checklist area. Nearly all these sightings involved birds coming into bird feeders or water features and in some cases the bird lingered for
a few days.

A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER (Vermivora pinus) was present at the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo on April 13th and another one was prothographed there on April 15th.

A male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE (Icterus bullockii) frequented (and was photographed) a private residence in Liberty Hill on April 13th and 14th.

A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER (Vermivora pinus) was studied on The Nature Conservancy's Barton Creek Habitat Preserve in southwest Austin on April 14th.

Union Grove WMA along Stillhouse Hollow Lake was productive on April 12th with 2 COMMON LOONS (Gavia immer) lingering, a SNOWY PLOVER (Charadrius alexandrinus), and the first HUDSONIAN GODWIT (Limosa aemastica) report for our area this spring.

A SNOWY PLOVER (Charadrius alexandrinus) was at the San Gabiel WMA where the river mouth meets Granger Lake on April 11th.

Two lingering HARRIS'S SPARROWS (Zonotrichia querula) were in western Milam county north of Thorndale on April 12th.

WHITE IBIS (Eudocimus albus) are not expected during the spring. Two adults were at Hornsby Bend on April 2nd, while an adult and an immature bird were present there on April 5th.

The first area reports of PAINTED BUNTING (Passerina ciris) and DICKCISSEL (Spiza americana) come from the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo on April 4th.

A late EASTERN TOWHEE (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) was northwest of Harwood in southern Caldwell County on April 4th.

A WHITE-TAILED KITE (Elanus leucurus) was photographed near the demonstration gardens at the Mueller Development (the old airport site) on the east side of Austin on April 2nd.

A male BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK (Pheucticus melanocephalus) was photographed at a private residence two miles east of Elgin on April 2nd.

A late HOODED MERGANSER (Lophodytes cucullatus) was at Hornsby BendBend on April 2nd.

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER (Pluvialis dominica) has been on the exposed shoreline of Lake Pflugerville since September 30th (still present as of October 11th).

A BALD EAGLE (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) put in an appearance at Hornsby Bend on October 11th. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT (Icteria virens) and a BALTIMORE ORIOLE (Icterus galbula) were also on the property along the river on the 11th.

The Austin-Area Rare Bird Alert is a service of the Travis Audubon Society. This update is as of 9.00am, January 17th, 2008:

--- EXCEPTIONAL SIGHTINGS---

A GREAT KISKADEE (Pitangus sulphuratus) was photographed near the entrance to
Willis Creek Park on Granger Lake on January 3rd. The bird has been looked for since but not yet relocated.

An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (Larus fuscus) was present (and photographed) on Meadow Lake in Round Rock late the afternoon of January 2nd and has been seen there or on private property nearby as of January 6th. There are only a handful of Austin area records for this species, and none in the last couple of years. Meadow Lake is off of Settlement Drive, a quarter mile so north of its intersection with Old Settlers Drive. The small lake does not usually hold any gulls though there were hundreds there when the Lesser Black-backed was initially seen.

A female BLACK SCOTER (Melanitta nigra) has been present at Lake Pflugerville. First found (and photographed) on November 17th, it was still being seen as of December 30th. Lake Pflugerville is at the intersection of Jesse Bohls and Weiss Lanes on the east side of Pflugerville.

--- RARITIES FOUND THIS PAST WEEK---

A PURPLE FINCH (Carpodacus purpureus) was observed near Old Manor Rd and Springdale Rd in northeast Austin on January 15th.

McKinney Roughs held a CASSIN'S VIREO (Vireo cassinii) as well as a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER (Mniotilta varia) on January 15th.

A WHITE-TAILED KITE (Elanus leucurus) was along FM 969 in eastern Bastrop County on January 15th.

The Schaezler's Warbler Woods near Cibolo held a LONG-BILLED THRASHER (Toxostoma longirostre) and a GRAY CATBIRD (Dumetella carolinensis) on January 13th.

One ANHINGA (Anhinga anhinga) and one GRAY CATBIRD (Dumetella carolinensis) were at Hornsby Bend on January 12th.

--- CONTINUING BIRDS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

A BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD (Selasphorus platycercus) first seen at a private residence near Bee Caves and 360 in southwest Austin on August 27th was still being seen as of January 17th. It reappeared on November 21st after not having been seen since November 2nd.

A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER (Dendroica pensylvanica) reported from the New Braunfels CBC on December 30th was still present as of January 5th. This bird is being seen in Hinman Island Park in New Braunfels.

An ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD (Calypte anna) was photographed visiting a feeder on private property in Spring Branch (Blanco County) on December 19th, and was still present as of January 1st.

Six SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS (Tyrannus forficatus) were along Old Settler's Blvd. in Round Rock as recently as January 1st.

A few CAVE SWALLOWS (Petrochelidon fulva) are lingering in our area with several reports at different locations, with recent reports of a single bird on the Bell County CBC as well as multiple birds in multiple locations on the Austin CBC, both counts being held on December 15th. Fifteen or more were present near Peaceable Kingdom (Bell County) on December 23rd. At least 5 birds continue in northeast Austin.

Recent wintering WHITE-EYED VIREO (Vireo griseus) sightings include one at the Schaezler's Warbler Woods property near Cibolo on January 1st and a handful of other sightings around Austin during the month of January.

--- RARE SIGHTINGS FROM PREVIOUS WEEKS ---

Unusual for winter, a NASHVILLE WARBLER (Vermivora ruficapilla) was at a private residence near Smithville on January 7th.

Two ANHINGAS (Anhinga anhinga) were at Meadow Lake in Round Rock on January 6th.

An OVENBIRD (Seiurus aurocapilla) was reported along the Blanco River in se. Blanco County on January 5th.

A birding/kayaking survey of the Colorado River between the 183/Montopolis Bridge and Hornsby Bend on January 5th produced the following highlights: 2 ANHINGA (Anhinga anhinga), a RINGED KINGFISHER (Megaceryle torquatus), and a WHITE-EYED VIREO (Vireo griseus).

The Granger CBC was held on January 5th with birding highlights that included ANHINGA (Anhinga Anhinga), several VIRGINIA RAILS (Rallus limicola), a BURROWING OWL (Athene cunicularia), SAY'S PHOEBES (Sayornis saya), WHITE-EYED VIREO (Vireo griseus) and LARK BUNTINGS (Calamospiza melanocorys).

The Balcones Canyonland CBC on January 4th had exciting birds including ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER (Myiarchus cinerascens) and GRAY CATBIRD (Dumetella carolinensis).

A visit to the Gonzales area on January 4th was very productive with several great finds: an ANHINGA (Anhinga anhinga) at Woods Lake, 4 HARRIS'S HAWKS (Parabuteo unicinctus), a SAY'S PHOEBE (Sayornis saya), a PLUMBEOUS VIREO (Vireo plumbeus), 3 WHITE-EYED VIREOS (Vireo griseus), 18 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus), and 14 PURPLE FINCHES (Carpodacus purpureus).

A RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER (Sphyrapicus nuchalis) was near Bastrop & Buescher State Park on January 2nd.

A ZONE-TAILED HAWK (Buteo albonotatus) first found near Spring Branch (Blanco County) on December 27th was still being seen as of January 1st.

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER (Mniotilta varia) was near La Grange on December 30th.

Two ZONE-TAILED HAWKS (Buteo albonotatus) were over Lake Austin near City Park on December 29th.

A PALM WARBLER (Dendroica palmarum) was in Tahitian Village in Bastrop on December 29th.
